Steve and Courtney's Wedding!

Congratulations to my friends Steve and Courtney on their wedding! The church was packed. Downstairs was full with a lot of people in the balcony. If you’ve ever been to Nazarene you know what I’m talking about. Afterwards we headed over to the reception where we had a good time eating, dancing and reflecting on this lovely day.We all finally saw Pastor dance! He did a good job with Courtney. I was starting to believe he couldn't dance but he showed us he still had it. No I didn't dance, just took pics and laughed at everybody else in the Soul Train line.

I will always be praying for you Steve and Courtney...Love you both!

They performed with N.E.R.D. at one of their concerts a few years back and provided the live instrumentation for their "In Search Of" album. These are my two favorite cuts.

Beautiful Day in Ocean City

Like Ice Cube said, today was a good day. It was the best day in 2009 hands down. My friend Josh invited me to hang out with the “Jersey Crew” for a day in Ocean City. I previously had plans for the weekend but they got cancelled so I decided to go to Ocean City. When I stepped outside around 9 this morning it was warm. That was a feeling that I haven’t felt in about six months. As I was making way over to Jersey I rode Patco for the first time in years and I forgot how awesome it was. First off the trains run 24 hours a day which meant I knew I didn’t have to worry about rushing back to make it home. What is ironic is that with Septa being much larger than Patco, it doesn’t have a late night weekend service for its regional rail lines. I don’t understand it, on a Saturday night the last R8 train leaves downtown around 10:30.  It doesn’t make sense and I got to make mention of this to Septa Fail. Anyways, Patco has a better fare system than Septa and I love their retro style interior design. It hasn’t been updated since the 1970’s.

When I get into Jersey my boy John was waiting for me. We made a few stops and on the road we were to Ocean City. It didn’t take that long to get there even with the small amount of traffic we encountered right before we got into Ocean City. When we got to the boardwalk it was packed. I was telling John that I should have wore my sandals because I could tell it was going to get a whole lot warmer. As we started walking on the boardwalk we ran into the Doo Dah parade. It was pretty cool to watch as all types of people dressed up in various outfits with some playing instruments. A couple of us hit up Max & Manco’s for a few slices of pizza and then it was off to the beach! This is where I really wanted my sandals and my shorts. My chucks and jeans were clearly no match for the sand. After taking off my socks and shoes and rolling up my pants I was ready for our game of football. It was the Smallville Crows versus The Other Guys. We didn’t think of that team name, John’s t-shirt gave us the idea. It was an intense game as both teams had a mixture of guys and girls. As the game went on my team, the Smallville Crows, lost a key player in Josh 1.0. It was a costly injury as we lost the game. Our team gave a valiant effort but we came up short to The Other Guys.

The football game pretty much wore out everybody so we chilled on the beach for a little bit. As we went to get some water I noticed that somebody named Jilly owned the whole boardwalk. Her name was on almost every store. Jilly’s Fries, Jilly’s Clothing Store, Jilly’s Water Ice and etc. I was like wow Jilly must run Ocean City. Once our cool down period was over it was time for some Polish water ice. We found a place and most of got some Polish water ice. I think it could give Rita’s a run for it’s money. We tried to get a game of shuffle board in before we left but unbeknownst to Justin it was closed for the season. That’s when we decided to call it a day and head back home.

Now this is where the Jersey crew got major cool points. John told me that one of his friends invited us over dinner so I was like the Patco runs all night, I’m down man. When we got over the ladies were finishing up cooking the food. The turkey burgers, shrimp/veggie kabobs and cinnamon/sugar sliced apples tasted so good! John said “this is how we roll over here in Jersey...we eat like this everyday”. This was a perfect way to end the day, after being on my feet all day it was a pleasure to sit back and chill with some awesome people. I also gave the group a little lesson on Twitter and answered some of their questions. I might have to give another lesson to Connor and Janet. They weren’t aware of the Twitter world and a 10 minute synopsis wasn’t enough for them.

It was a blessing to have such an enjoyable day. I met new people, made new friends, ate good food and experienced great weather. While riding around with John I saw a lot of Jersey and I was impressed. We drove to a Wegmans and it didn’t take us 40 minutes. I think that should be a determining factor if you say you live in a cool area. Next time I will be more prepared with my sandals and shorts and plenty of water. Watch out Justin, be ready the next time we play beach football. See ya soon Jersey crew!

Why have strippers at your bachelor party?

Let me start off saying this post isn't aimed to anyone particular but to all guys who have strippers at their bachelor parties.

I find interesting when guys who don't partake in the ritual of visiting a strip club all of sudden have strippers at their bachelor parties. Its like they are doing just because it is something they feel they have to do. I know I wouldn't want my future wife dancing around some half naked or naked men on the night before our wedding. Anything can go down when you are around beautiful naked ladies with all their focus on you. I know some guys think they are going out for some clean fun and then all of sudden the strippers pop out of nowhere. I'm not talking about that kind of situation but when the actual groom to be is planning all the festivities of his bachelor party.

Maybe its just me but when my time comes for me to get married I will be thinking about my wife and our wedding night. I was never the guy to hit up the strip clubs or run through tons of ladies so the idea of chilling with naked ladies I will only meet once doesn't float my boat. I just don't get it, all I can do is look, thats all. I'm sorry but I need more than to look and that's what I will have my wife for. Some guys tell their brides to be about the bachelor party and some don't. If you never surrounded yourself with strippers before what's the big deal to do it on the eve of your wedding?

The biggest reason why I don't condone these types of bachelor parties is my faith with God. I cannot say I am his follower and then knowingly go to a bachelor party with strippers. By no means am I a perfect person but this something that doesn't sit will with me. I have been to bachelor parties before but back then my faith isn't where it is today. I have changed, its baby steps but I'm trying. Recently this is something that has been on my heart and needed to write about it.

Somebody Doesn't Like North Philadelphia?

While checking on the competition I stumbled upon this.

Image

You will see this a lot where a plumber will advertise phone numbers to give the impression that they have multiple locations across the city (I am guilty of this) when in actuality all numbers go to the same place. Underneath those phone numbers you will see the locations they are trying to target. This plumber has every location covered in Philadelphia except for North Philadelphia. There is a high concentration of blacks that live in this particular area and they have one of the lowest household incomes in the city. I would like to find out if any other neighborhoods/zip codes in the city have equal or lesser household incomes than those in North Philadelphia.

The Yellow Pages are Dead

For some people this isn’t new but I am not writing this for you. I am writing this for all the business owners who feel that you must advertise in the yellow pages to make money. For years the reps from the yellow pages have done a great job in creating the illusion that we have to be in their book. Today is a new day. There are two major reasons why you shouldn’t be advertising in the yellow pages or at least reducing your spending with them significantly.

When you sign the contract to advertise in the yellow pages it is an annual contract. This means no matter what happens you have to pay that monthly amount. Business is a little slow and you need to allocate dollars elsewhere? The yellow pages will still want their money. Compare this to other forms of advertisement, direct mail, internet, billboards and etc. Those mediums do not make you sign up for the year. I know the yellow pages get printed every year so that’s why its an annual thing. That might have worked 10 years ago but now we have more efficient ways to reach our customers than soley relying on the yellow pages.

When you advertise in the yellow pages you are advertising right next to your competitors. This doesn't make much sense. Why would I spend almost $5K a month so my potential customers can see me and my competitions with a flick of the page. If you are in the middle of the particular category and want to get ahead you will have outspend the leader of that category. So you spend much more per month just to be #1 but we all know the customer will leaf through all the other companies. In the yellow pages it comes down to has the best designed ad, that’s it. You have to draw the customer to your ad and make them call you. It cracks me up when companies don’t spend money to hire an outside firm to design your ad. Yes, the yellow pages will design it for you but it looks like crap. So what if you spend $700 to have someone design, in the long run it will pay huge dividends. Just grab your yellow page book and go to the Plumbing section. The majority of the ads are done by the yellow pages and a few are done by an outside firm.

The yellow pages always had the upper hand when it came to having everybody advertise in their book. Most plumbers (I will use them because I work for a plumbing company and that category is one of the largest in the yellow pages) don’t have the time or don’t know about advertising in other places. So every year when the yellow page rep calls they look it over and sign up for year believing that they need the yellow pages. This has got to change. We are in 2009 and nobody shouldn't be thinking like this. There are tons of ways to reach your customer in more effective ways such as direct mail, billboards and internet. Ok, you are saying if I drop my advertising in the yellow pages where will I get my customers from? First, since the yellow page book comes out every year people always still hold onto previous years versions. So its not like once the new book comes out your phones will stop ringing. Before you stop advertising in the yellow pages you need to start to create your alternative marketing plan. Direct mail is the key. You can send a postcard out to your customers for around 35 cents. This will allow your message to get to the customer without interruption. They wont see your competitors, just your company. You just don’t send this out once but you keep hammering them. Do you remember America Online? They sent out those free discs to everybody and they kept doing it. This is the mentality you need to have. Increase your brand awareness. When your customer has a problem you want them to think of you not flipping through pages in the yellow pages. I am not going to go in too much detail but this is the mindset you need to have. Don’t be scared, just educate yourself so you know what to expect.

The big thing is the way the economy is right now. Everybody is looking ways to reduce their costs and one of the biggest costs in a small business advertising in the yellow pages is that cost. We spend around $9K to advertise in two yellow page books, Yellow Book and Idearc. If you read my earlier post I sat down with our Idearc reps for the upcoming year. We told them that we needed to reduce the annual budget. Of course they didn’t want to hear that. We talked and I discussed with them what other forms advertisement we were looking to divert our dollars to. They are salesmen and are very good at it. Before the meeting we wanted to reduce our spending significantly. After the meeting we left with them creating a proposal to incorporate other means of advertising other than in the yellow pages for a cheaper amount. The next meeting came and their proposal was a couple hundred dollars cheaper per month with us having a package consisting of direct mail, billboard and some internet marketing. I can’t knock the Idearc guys for creating a killer package. At first it was an awesome. I was enamored because we got all this for less money than last year. A sat on it for a few days and then it hit me. We still don’t control our advertising costs, its still an annual contract! Yes we get all these added benefits but they (Idearc) are still in charge. They are driving and we are just along for the ride.

We still haven’t had our follow up meeting since they offered us their package deal. The key is having control of your ad dollars and it is so true in today’s economic conditions. Idearc doesn’t want people reducing spending in their book. If you haven’t heard they just filed for bankruptcy. I don’t know the particulars but the word bankruptcy for a company whose majority of revenues comes from a printed paper product isn’t good. I want to educate other business owners and let them know to start thinking about reducing your spending in the yellow pages. If you don’t your competition will. I know my competition might be reading this but its ok, no other plumbing company has someone like me working for them. We are getting serious at Ingram’s. When we come never say you didn’t see it coming because if you’re reading this we just gave you a heads up.

This post was fueled by a comment from someone who read my earlier post. Thanks Bill.

AppleCare, a must have

I stopped in the King of Prussia Apple store and got a brand new spiffy battery. That means full charges and starting off with no cycles. My battery is so fresh and so clean. I must have changed my reservation time about 4 times before settling on the 4.15 time slot. I actually got there a little before 4, signed in and got to a Genius before 4.15. The service today was great and everybody welcomed me with a smile on their face. The store was jumping as expected but there was not too many AppleCare appointments. Big ups to Joshua on helping me. Unbeknownst to him he helped a few months back when my iPhone was acting funny. He explained to me what happened to my battery where there are two liquids inside the battery that keep it charged and when those two liquids come in contact with each other, expansion occurs. I should have taken a picture of my battery. Basically it started as a small bulge and then it got worse with the battery trying to come out of its casing. I couldn't hold a charge anymore because of this. As Josh got my new battery he said that the old battery was still usable. Right after he said that he took the old battery and used it to cut the plastic from the box which held my new battery. It was a funny joke as I was expecting some scientific example of how he could use this damaged battery. Josh did explain to me that Apple recycles all of its returned batteries.

As always I am impressed when I deal with Apple. When you venture of to the dark side and purchase your first Apple computer make sure to get Apple Care. Yes you have up to a year from the date of purchase to buy it. So if you don't buy it on the spot make a note to remind you to do so.
